Disco Beaks
Becky, a little bird, is having a good time partying in a nightclub, filled with other types of birds that are having the time of their life! Several birds show interest in Becky, they want to get her attention. So what do they do? Shake their bottoms. Each bird species has a beautiful mating dance that suits them, that's how Ben and Ron try to get the girls attention. They show hilarious dance steps... but Becky is not interested.
For my bachelor project I decided to create an animation around ... Yes, mating dances of birds! One day, while working on character design, I drew a group of animals / girls / cyclops with one eye. I was so inspired that I wanted to use these figures in animation. Because my other animation and my original bachelor idea was about dating anyway, I thought "hmm, what if I make something comical? Something recognizable from everyday life, but with a twist" I flipped through my sketchbook and came back to my bird drawing. Eureka! Birds can be really ridiculous, there are so many crazy videos of birds on the internet. Then I looked for a certain characteristic that I could convert into something recognizable. I suddenly ended up on a video of the mating dance of a bird of paradise. Then all the puzzle pieces fell together, mating dance, dancing in a nightclub, both the same !!
